Photographs should not be taken on a routine basis but limited to those instances where there is an opportunity to produce clear pictorial evidence of injury, such as bruises or lacerations. Explain the purpose of taking the photographs to the child. Use a scale, color charts and color bars to indicate the size and nature of injuries. Take photographs prior to medical treatment and prior to cleaning the injuries or removal of debris. Include views of different angles, full body, close-up shots, one photo of the child's face and two photos of every major trauma area. Consent of the parent is not required for photographs and X-rays for areas of trauma.
