Explain exam procedures to the child and adult caretaker
Interview Procedures (Chapter 4, pg. 18-19
The pre-interview involves the child and caretakers and provides an opportunity to explain exam procedures and answer questions. Reserve in-depth interviews of caretakers until interview(s) with the child and the physical examination have been completed. Only that information necessary for the medical care of the child should be obtained from caretakers in advance. Limit the number of people present.
The medical history and investigatory interview ideally should be conducted together. The medical history is always conducted and consists of information gathering to guide the physical examination and initiate treatment. The investigatory interview may be conducted in the Emergency Department when a child presents for immediate medical intervention, as defined above, or it may be deferred and done under less pressure in an appropriate medical setting.
