At the minimum, sexually abused children should have one follow-up medical exam one to two weeks following the initial medical treatment. An evaluation with an individual skilled in the assessment of the emotional impact of sexual abuse is essential to promote recovery. Document referrals for the following:
ongoing medical care
mental health services
victim advocacy services
law enforcement services
Include dates and times of follow-up appointments in the medical record and on separate card for the victim (family). List discharge instructions in the medical record. Provide the patient with a written copy of instructions. Include the telephone numbers of health care practitioner to contact in case of emergency or questions about follow-up.
