The decision to culture children for STDs should be made on an individual basis. If indicated, based on knowledge of
the last known sexual contact and incubation period of STDs, perform the following:
Culture for N. gonorrhoeae collected from the pharynx and anus in both sexes, the vagina in females and the urethra
in males.
Cultures for Chlamydia trachomatis collected from the anus in both sexes and from the vagina in girls.
Culture and wet mount of vaginal swab specimens should be obtained for bacterial vaginosis and Trichomonas vaginalis.
Serum should be collected for baseline data in case follow-up serologic tests are positive.
Urinalysis should be done to rule out hematuria.
Stool guaiac should be considered during the initial or follow-up exam.
Perform a serum pregnancy test.
Diagnostic testing for herpes simplex virus or human papillomavirus should be considered.
Any diagnostic laboratory or imaging studies to delineate presence and extent of injuries.
