In New York State, this program was first introduced as the Child Abuse Medical Provider (CHAMP) Program,  funded through a grant from the New York State Department of Health.

In addition, a "Network" of providers, both novice and expert, has been established. This allows New York providers to continue learning through case conferences and peer review. An on-line forum for this network is available through CHAMP-L. The advanced continuing education course will provide an additional educational resource to CHAMP providers.

How the CHAMP Program Works...

Who is eligible to participate as a CHAMP provider?

Eligible providers include physicians (pediatricians and family practitioners), nurse practitioners and physician assistants with pediatric training. These providers must currently be practicing in New York State and must hold a valid New York State License.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) may purchase the book Evaluating Child Sexual Abuse and are encouraged to contact a local CHAMP provider to ensure collaboration.

The mentorship is...

New York Providers also have the opportunity to participate in a mentorship with a professional who is experienced in performing child sexual abuse exams. There is no fee for a provider to participate in this mentorship. Providers spend a minimum of 15 hours at a designated mentor site and learn through observation of pediatric examinations. Preference for these mentorships will be given to providers in geographically underserved areas. Individualized scheduling is arranged according to geographic area and time constraints. Upon successful completion of the mentorship, the provider will be awarded 15 CME credits.

This opportunity is made available through a grant from the New York State Department of Health to the State University of New York Research Foundation.
