Advanced Clinical Pathology
Duration: 6 months
Goals & Objectives:
Duties & Responsiblities
- Be available for any patient related calls coming from Core Lab, Special Chemistry, Microbiology, Special Hematology, Blood Bank, Bone Marrow, Lymph Node service, Cytogenetics and Molecular Pathology, Immunology and HLA lab (when there is no resident in that particular rotation). If there is a resident in a particular rotation, then the resident on the rotation is responsible for any patient related calls, not the resident in Advanced CP coverage. Then, it is up to the resident (especially first year residents and post sophomore fellows) to call the Advance CP resident for any questions or problems.
- Review slides in morphology on a daily basis.
- Sign out SPEP, UPEP, CSF electrophoresis, amniotic fluid bilirubin, LDH electrophoresis cases.
- Help first year residents, post-sophomore fellows and/or bone marrow technologists with bone marrow cases.
- Take patient history in special hematology consults, when there is no resident in the rotation and sign out the case with the attending.
- Assist the residents in working up the Microbiology unknown case for the Microbiology conference.
- Participate in HLA lab in the work-up of transplant patients and participate in the Rheumatology conference (Thursday, 7:30 am, every six weeks).
- Attend 11:00 am Monday CP service review.
- Attend 1:00 pm Monday Cytogenetics conferences.
- Attend daily 1:30 pm Microbiology rounds.
- Attend 4:00 pm Wednesday Infectious Diseases Conference.
- Responsible for the Unknown CP conference of the month. The resident is responsible for collecting the interesting CP cases encountered in a month and presenting them in an unknown format during the Unknown CP conference. This rotation is scheduled after the individual CP rotations are done. There will be no cross-coverage of Clinical Pathology rotations when they are done for the first time. The purpose is to have senior residents acting like junior attendings, responsible for a broad spectrum of CP related calls and issues. This rotation will give the senior residents the opportunity to revise CP knowledge accumulated in the first years of residency, to integrate the information and to prepare them to handle CP problems in their future career.
