Specimen Requirements

Whole Blood
Minimum Volume:1.2 uL
Collection:Capillary fingerstick preferred. Venous whole blood, arterial whole blood, neonate arterial, neonate heel stick.
Stability:Sample should be tested immediately after collection.
Container:Fresh whole blood or Lithium Heparin
Rejection Causes:Capillary samples from other sites (earlobes or toes) are not acceptable.

Contraindications

Capillary whole blood specimens (e.g. obtained by fingerstick) should not be used in patients receiving intensive medical intervention/therapy that may include severe hypotension, shock, hyperosmolar-hyperglycemia and severe dehydration. See CM P-48G for more information.
