Rejection Causes: | PCR testing is only performed if the patient has encephalitis and is hospitalized. ELISA testing is performed on patients with encephalitis or meningitis, hospitalized or not. |

Microbiology performs a real-time PCR assay for the most common CNS pathogens (see LAB8784). Testing performed by NYS (LAB2812) includes additional targets with a significantly longer time to results.Interpretative Information
Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for HSV 1 & 2, CMV, EBV, VZV, HHV6, Adenovirus, Enterovirus, WNV, EEE, Powassan, and Heartland Virus. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for West Nile virus.Serology tests are also available on acute and convalescent sera for WNV, EEE, WEE, SLE, Powassan virus and California serogroup viruses.Test Includes
