Specimen Requirements

Urine: 20-30 mL first void in sterile cup, or APTIMA urine transport Cervical, male urethral, vaginal, throat, rectal or eye swab collected in specific APTIMA transport determined by specimen source (See Collection information) Thinprep Pap collection vial.
Collection:URINE: Patient should not have urinated for 1 hour prior to collection. 1. Collect FIRST 20-30 mL of urine in sterile cup or Aptima urine transport.
CERVICAL SWAB (WOMEN ONLY) - APTIMA Unisex Specimen Collection Kit (purple): 1. Remove excess mucus from exocervix with large-tipped swab (white). Discard this swab. 2. Insert small-tipped blue swab into endocervix, rotate 10-30 seconds. Avoid touching vaginal walls. 3. Insert swab into transport buffer tube, break swab at score line, and replace cap.
URETHRAL SWAB (MALES ONLY) - APTIMA Unisex Specimen Collection Kit (purple): 1. Patient should not have urinated for 1 hour prior to collection. 2. Insert small-tipped blue swab 2-4 cm into urethra, rotate 2-3 seconds. 3. Insert swab into transport tube, break swab at scoreline, and replace the cap.
VAGINAL SWAB (WOMEN ONLY) - APTIMA Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit (orange): 1. Place your thumb and forefinger in the middle of the swab shaft. Do not hold the swab shaft below the scoreline. 2. Insert swab about 2 inches inside the opening of the vagina and gently rotate the swab for 10 to 30 seconds. Make sure the swab touches the walls of the vagina so that moisture is absorbed by the swab. 3. Insert swab into transport tube so that the score line is at the top of the tube. 4. Break the swab shaft at the score line against the side of the tube, and replace cap.
THROAT SWAB - APTIMA Unisex Collection Kit (purple): 1. Insert small-tipped blue swab ensuring contact with throat and bilateral tonsils (if intact). 2. Avoid contact with cheeks and tongue both entering and exiting collection. 3. Insert swab into transport tube, break swab at score line, and replace cap.
RECTAL SWAB - APTIMA Unisex Swab Collection Kit (purple): 1. Insert small-tipped blue swab into rectum 1-2 inches past the outside of the anus, gently rotate swab 5 to 10 seconds. 2. Avoid contact with external skin of rectal area. 3. Insert swab into transport tube, break swab at score line, and replace cap.
EYE SWAB (NEONATE) - APTIMA Multitest Swab Collection Kit (orange): 1. Place your thumb and forefinger in the middle of the swab shaft. Do not hold the swab below the score line. 2. Gently swab rim of eyelid, making sure to collect any moisture/discharge occuring. 3. Insert swab into transport tube, break swab at score line, and replace cap. 4. This specimen type is sent to a Reference Laboratory.

Stability:Specimens in collection kits: 60 days at 2-30 degrees

Interpretative Information

Amplification methods are the most sensitive assays available for diagnosing C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae infections. This test is not appropriate for specimens other than those listed above. Culture is strongly recommended for sexual assault/abuse cases.
