Academics

As the regions only academic medical center we take the responsibility of training future healthcare providers and researchers very seriously. Our programs are designed to enhance clinical knowledge and skills, develop professionalism, and encourage research in a wide range of specialty areas.

College of Medicine

The Medical Students Pathology Course is a combined course of general, anatomical, and clinical pathology with emphasis on basic vocabulary and skills, general principles and analysis of problems of diseases. Students develop familiarity with laboratory methods and approaches to solving clinical problems.

Pathology electives provide medical students with an excellent introduction into this area of medicine. These courses give students a look into the key role that pathology and laboratory medicine play in diagnosing and treating disease.

Our Residency Program is an ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) 4-year training program in preparation for examination by the American Board of Pathology. Exposure to a broad range of experiences in Anatomic, Clinical and experimental Pathology provide opportunities for residents to explore individual interests and serve as a foundation for a career in academic pathology or community practice

Fellowship positions for specialty training are availble in Surgical Pathology, Cytopathology, and Hematopathology.

College of Health Professions

Medical Technology B.S. and M.S.: Medical Technologists (also known as clinical laboratory scientists) develop, perform and supervise laboratory testing that is used to diagnose and treat disease and to provide vital data for research studies.

The Bachelor of Science program is a 2+2 course of study where the student obtains a minimum of 60 semester hours of college level prerequisites at the college of their choice and completes their Junior and Senior year Upstate Medical University. Graduates of this program are eligible to apply for New York State licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.

The Master of Science program provides advanced training to experienced medical technologists. Master’s students specialize in either chemistry, hematology, or microbiology and select a minor area of concentration in either management/supervision, education or basic science.

Medical Biotechnology B.S.: This program educates students in the areas of molecular biology and aspects of clinical laboratory science that pertain to biomedical research and laboratory diagnosis. It also is a 2+2 program as explained above.
