Requirements
Candidates for the specialty of obstetrics and gynecology are required to complete four years of accredited graduate medical education in our program, including:
- 18 months of clinical obstetrics
The 18-month obstetrics experience includes subspecialty time on maternal/fetal medicine and rotations during the fourth year as the chief resident with complete responsibility for the service.
- 18 months of clinical gynecology
The 18 month gynecology experience incorporates subspecialty rotations in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, preinvasive and invasive gynecologic oncology, urogynecology and pelvic floor dysfunction, and rotations during the fourth year as the chief resident with complete responsibility for the service.
- 6 months of ambulatory primary care medicine
The six-month ambulatory care experience provides training in primary and preventative care. Specific areas of training include comprehensive history (medical, nutritional, sexual, family, genetic, and social); complete physical examination; appropriate use of laboratory and diagnostic techniques; appropriate use of consultants and community resources; patient education; and diagnosis and treatment of nonreproductive illnesses commonly affecting women.
The four-year curriculum has a strong clinical orientation in both inpatient and ambulatory care settings.
Within our program, the requirement of progressive clinical responsibility is met under faculty supervision commensurate with the resident's level of training. As recommended by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, education in the basic sciences is continuously integrated with clinical experiences.
In the latter years of training the resident is given greater responsibilities in providing patient care within all the subdisciplines within the specialty. The final year of the resident's program must include the responsibilities of a chief resident in accordance with the description of the program as accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education.
