A semen analysis measures the quantity and quality of the sperm. Several characteristics are examined, including the concentration of the sperm, the ability of sperm to move (motility) as well as the shape of the sperm. Usually, a man may have several semen analysis performed, especially during long treatment periods. The semen sample must be collected within one hour of the test and is obtained by masturbation. Our andrology laboratory conducting the test will provide a sterile container to be used for collecting the sample.
If the results prove inconclusive, more extensive testing for sperm function tests, anatomic defects in the testes or abnormal conditions of the male reproductive organs may be required to help establish the diagnosis.
