The Graduate Medical Education (GME) Office is pleased that you are considering a graduate medical education program at Upstate Medical University. The GME Office is accountable for the quality and administrative oversight of all ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs. The GME Office works in collaboration with Upstate’s program directors, program administrators, hospital administrators, department chairs and many other personnel to create a quality learning and working environment for more than 500 trainees in over 40 specialty programs. We strive to ensure the safety of patients at University Hospital and to enhance scholarly activities of residents/fellows and faculty throughout the institution.
Upstate Medical University participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), Inc. and the San Francisco Central Application System . Medical students applying through the NRMP must apply to our programs through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). All appointments are made subject to the provisions of these organizations. Programs select resident applications on the basis of interviews and review of records. Recruitment is coordinated by each individual program and inquiries and details about the process should be directed to each program. Please note that in-person interviews and Skype/FaceTime interviews are by invitation only. For specific details on a program’s application requirements, please contact the appropriate department.
All candidates entering residency or fellowship programs at Upstate on or after July 1, 2017 will be subject to a pre-employment (post-offer) drug test. This includes any prior Upstate resident/fellow who has had a break in service and is returning to employment. For candidates entering residency or fellowship programs at Upstate, drug screening and final results must be available prior to the first day of their program as a prerequisite to employment.
All residents in ACGME-accredited programs are required to successfully pass USMLE Step III/COMLEX III prior to June 1st of the final year of residency training, as evidenced by obtaining a passing grade for that examination and presenting an official transcript of the score to the individual program director. Note that some departments may have stricter policies on USMLE Step III/COMLEX III.
All Fellows entering GMEC approved programs must have successfully completed USMLE Step III/COMLEX III prior to starting the program, as evidenced by obtaining a passing grade for that examination and presenting an official transcript of the score as a part of the application process.
Each residency appointment is renewed annually based upon an assessment of the resident’s performance. The resident is appointed as a SUNY Clinical Assistant Instructor, classified as a temporary employee and subject to the terms, rights and responsibilities of current negotiated agreements between the State of New York and the United University Professions. All resident/fellow appointments are up to a one year duration beginning July 1, the beginning of the academic year. Some programs have a required orientation that begins prior to July 1.
