PGY1 - Obstetrics - Triage Rotation (One in the PGY1 Year)
- Learn cervical examination
- Learn speculum examination- infections, rule out rupture of membranes
- Evaluate medical complications- asthma, etc. (with assistance from senior residents)
- Learn basic obstetric sonography
- Learn to evaluate third trimester bleeding
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY1 - Upstate - West Campus - Gynecology Rotation (2 Total in the PGY1
Year)
- Learn the basic techniques of laparoscopic surgery (including assisting with LAVH)
- Learn the technique of laparotomy (including TAH, debulking procedures)
- Care for postoperative patients
- Manage complications, postoperative (i.e. chest pain, bleeding, shortness of breath)
- Learn the principles of gynecology call- i.e. ectopic pregnancies
- Learn coverage of intensive care unit for gynecology patients
- Learn to evaluate and manage consults
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY1 - University Hospital/Crouse Hospital - Gynecology Rotation (2
Total in the PGY1 Year)
- Learn to evaluate and manage gynecology emergencies in ER (i.e. ectopic)
- Understand and manage family planning aspects of gynecology care
- Learn techniques of operative laparoscopy, including oncology exposure
- Occasional laparotomy exposure
- Learn the techniques of hysteroscopic evaluation
- Become familiar with transvaginal and transabdominal sonography, as well as
radiologic evaluation of particular disease processes
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY1 - University Hospital - Emergency Room Rotation (One in the
PGY1 Year)
- Learn to evaluate and manage patients with a wide range of non-obstetric/gynecologic
symptoms
- Learn emergent medical care- i.e., trauma, myocardial infarction,
arrhythmia, etc.
- Become familiar with radiologic evaluation methods
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY2 - Day and Night Obstetrics Rotations (4 Total in the PGY2 Year)
- Perform repeat cesarean sections and sections for abnormal lie or complicated
histories- ie, preterm, nonreassuring fetal status, etc.
- Conduct triage examinations, including speculum exams and obstetric sonography
- Perform labor management /induction protocols
- Continue to learn about obstetric analgesia
- Increased exposure to operative vaginal delivery
- Assist in the care of more complicated cases-preterm, preeclampsia, comorbidities,
gestational diabetes, etc.
- Manage postpartum / postoperative patient care
- Conduct fetal scalp electrode, intrauterine pressure catheter placement
- Manage nonreassuring fetal status
- Continue to learn obstetric sonography
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY2 - Gynecology - A Rotation (University Hospital/Crouse Hospital)

- Perform major gynecologic operative cases - laparotomy and laparoscopy
- Evaluate the emergency room patient
- Manage postoperative patients and complications
- Evaluate and manage consults
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY2 - Gynecology-B/Ambulatory Surgery Rotation (2 Total in the
PGY2 Year)
- Perform operative/diagnostic laparoscopy
- Perform operative/diagnostic hysterscopy
- Evaluate and manage emergency room (GYN) patients
- Learn the techniques of Cone biopsy/LEEP
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

- Perform laparoscopy/laparotomy for various indications
- Manage postoperative patients and complications
- Manage gynecology patients in intensive care unit
- Evaluate radiologic data
- Consult for emergency room gynecology emergencies (i.e., ectopic pregnancy)

PGY3 - Gynecologic Oncology Rotation (One 10-11 Week Rotation in
the PGY3 Year)
- Learn to evaluate and manage pelvic masses
- Learn the techniques of staging procedures
- Perform operative techniques of laparoscopic/exploratory laparatomy for treatment as
well as vaginal surgery
- Evaluate radiologic data
- Obtain knowledge of chemotherapeutic agents and radiation procedures
- Manage complex postoperative patients
- Learn more about the techniques of operative/diagnostic hysterectomy and vaginal
surgery
- Learn office evaluation of oncology patients
- Learn how to manage anticoagulation
- Learn the management of TPN
- Manage emergency gynecology calls and consults

PGY3 - Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Rotation (One 10-11 Week Rotation in the PGY3 Year)
- Learn the evaluation and management of various endocrinopathies, including thyroid,
adrenal, pituitary, ovarian etc.
- Learn the evaluation and management of hirsutism
- Learn the evaluation and treatment of the infertile couple
- Learn the evaluation and treatment of menstrual irregularities amenorrhea,
menorrhagia, etc.
- Obtain knowledge about the techniques of superovulation, intrauterine insemination,
and IVF
- Obtain knowledge about the management of ovarian hyperstimulation
- Obtain knowledge about the evaluation and management of congenital anomalies of
the pelvis
- Learn about the management of the perimenopause and menopause
- Learn techniques of operative/diagnostic laparoscopy with or without laser
- Learn techniques of laparatomy including cystectomy, tubal re-anastomosis
- Learn about treatment of endometriosis-medical and surgical
- Learn more about the technique of operative hysteroscopy
- Learn more about sexual dysfunction

PGY3 - Gynecology Rotation Night Float(University Hospital/Crouse
Hospital) (2 Total in the PGY3 Year)
- Manage postoperative patients and associated complications (pulmonary embolus,
hemorrhage, hypertensive crisis, etc.)
- Manage emergencies (gynecology) -ectopic, hemorrhage, etc.
- Perform operative interventions in emergency situations (laparoscopy or laparatomy,
hysteroscopy)
- Conduct in-house consultation services
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY3 - High Risk Obstetrics Rotation (2 Total in the PGY3 Year)
- Learn how to evaluate and manage complex obstetric patients - preterm labor,
preeclampsia/eclampsia, diabetes, heart disease, etc.
- Admit maternal transports
- Learn more about antepartum and postpartum care for the high risk obstetric patient
- Perform cesarean sections
- Perform circumcisions
- Manage the labor of complicated patients
- Acquire further knowledge of operative vaginal delivery
- Acquire further knowledge of obstetric sonography

PGY3 - Outpatient Medicine Rotation (2 Total in the PGY3 Year)
- Learn to evaluate and manage comorbidities in the obstetric patient, i.e., hypertension,
diabetes, seizure disorders, respiratory and endocrinological disease
- Obtain more knowledge of obstetric ultrasound
- Learn more about the use of medical consults (i.e. cardiology) when necessary
- Learn more about the management of anticoagulation
- Learn more about blood sugar control and management in the diabetic patient
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY4 - Breast Clinic Rotation (One in the PGY4 Year)
- Learn the evaluation and management of benign and malignant breast masses
- Obtain knowledge of breast imaging studies - mammogram, sono, MRI, etc.
- Learn the techniques of fine needle aspiration and core biopsy
- Obtain knowledge of chemotherapeutic and radiation treatment
- Obtain knowledge of complications resulting from surgical interventions
- Learn about risk factors and screening protocols
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY4 -Day and Night Obstetrics Rotations (4 Total in the PGY4 Year)
- Supervise all junior residents; management of complete medical issues and obstetric
issues
- Perform operative vaginal delivery
- Perform cesarean sections (complicated)
- Manage laboring patients
- Provide obstetric analgesia
- Repair complicated lacerations (i.e. 4th degree)
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY4 - Gynecology Rotation (2 Total in the PGY4 Year)
- Supervise entire gynecology service
- Perform complex cases, including laparoscopy and laparotomy (under supervision of
surgeon)
- Perform vaginal surgery /reconstructive (supervised)
- Obtain increased knowledge of radiologic studies
- Involvement in operative hysteroscopic procedures
- Involvement in gynecology emergency cases
- Conduct in-house consultation services
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY4 - Urogynecology Rotation (2 Total in the PGY4 Year)
- Learn how to evaluate pelvic floor dysfunction - prolapse, incontinence, etc.
- Learn the principles of conservative and operative intervention
- Obtain exposure to operative vaginal surgery and bladder suspension procedures
- Obtain knowledge of urodynamic studies
- Acquire knowledge of postoperative care and management of complications
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
PGY4 - Neonatal Intensive Care Rotation (One Total in the PGY4 Year)
- Learn about resuscitation of the newborn in the delivery room
- Obtain knowledge about managing prematurity - including ventilator
- Learn about electrolyte management of the premature infant (including TPN)
- Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
