PGY1 - Obstetrics - Triage Rotation (One in the PGY1 Year)

  1. Learn cervical examination
  2. Learn speculum examination- infections, rule out rupture of membranes
  3. Evaluate medical complications- asthma, etc. (with assistance from senior residents)
  4. Learn basic obstetric sonography
  5. Learn to evaluate third trimester bleeding
  6. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY1 - Upstate - West Campus - Gynecology Rotation (2 Total in the PGY1 Year)

  1. Learn the basic techniques of laparoscopic surgery (including assisting with LAVH)
  2. Learn the technique of laparotomy (including TAH, debulking procedures)
  3. Care for postoperative patients
  4. Manage complications, postoperative (i.e. chest pain, bleeding, shortness of breath)
  5. Learn the principles of gynecology call- i.e. ectopic pregnancies
  6. Learn coverage of intensive care unit for gynecology patients
  7. Learn to evaluate and manage consults
  8. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY1 - University Hospital/Crouse Hospital - Gynecology Rotation (2 Total in the PGY1 Year)

  1. Learn to evaluate and manage gynecology emergencies in ER (i.e. ectopic)
  2. Understand and manage family planning aspects of gynecology care
  3. Learn techniques of operative laparoscopy, including oncology exposure
  4. Occasional laparotomy exposure
  5. Learn the techniques of hysteroscopic evaluation
  6. Become familiar with transvaginal and transabdominal sonography, as well as radiologic evaluation of particular disease processes
  7. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY1 - University Hospital - Emergency Room Rotation (One in the PGY1 Year)

  1. Learn to evaluate and manage patients with a wide range of non-obstetric/gynecologic symptoms
  2. Learn emergent medical care- i.e., trauma, myocardial infarction, arrhythmia, etc.
  3. Become familiar with radiologic evaluation methods
  4. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY2 - Day and Night Obstetrics Rotations (4 Total in the PGY2 Year)

  1. Perform repeat cesarean sections and sections for abnormal lie or complicated histories- ie, preterm, nonreassuring fetal status, etc.
  2. Conduct triage examinations, including speculum exams and obstetric sonography
  3. Perform labor management /induction protocols
  4. Continue to learn about obstetric analgesia
  5. Increased exposure to operative vaginal delivery
  6. Assist in the care of more complicated cases-preterm, preeclampsia, comorbidities, gestational diabetes, etc.
  7. Manage postpartum / postoperative patient care
  8. Conduct fetal scalp electrode, intrauterine pressure catheter placement
  9. Manage nonreassuring fetal status
  10. Continue to learn obstetric sonography
  11. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY2 - Gynecology - A Rotation (University Hospital/Crouse Hospital) (2 Total in the PGY2 Year)

  1. Perform major gynecologic operative cases - laparotomy and laparoscopy
  2. Evaluate the emergency room patient
  3. Manage postoperative patients and complications
  4. Evaluate and manage consults
  5. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY2 - Gynecology-B/Ambulatory Surgery Rotation (2 Total in the PGY2 Year)

  1. Perform operative/diagnostic laparoscopy
  2. Perform operative/diagnostic hysterscopy
  3. Evaluate and manage emergency room (GYN) patients
  4. Learn the techniques of Cone biopsy/LEEP
  5. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY2 - Upstate - West Campus - Gynecology Rotation (2 Total in the PGY2 Year)

  1. Perform laparoscopy/laparotomy for various indications
  2. Manage postoperative patients and complications
  3. Manage gynecology patients in intensive care unit
  4. Evaluate radiologic data
  5. Consult for emergency room gynecology emergencies (i.e., ectopic pregnancy)
  6. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY3 - Gynecologic Oncology Rotation (One 10-11 Week Rotation in the PGY3 Year)

  1. Learn to evaluate and manage pelvic masses
  2. Learn the techniques of staging procedures
  3. Perform operative techniques of laparoscopic/exploratory laparatomy for treatment as well as vaginal surgery
  4. Evaluate radiologic data
  5. Obtain knowledge of chemotherapeutic agents and radiation procedures
  6. Manage complex postoperative patients
  7. Learn more about the techniques of operative/diagnostic hysterectomy and vaginal surgery
  8. Learn office evaluation of oncology patients
  9. Learn how to manage anticoagulation
  10. Learn the management of TPN
  11. Manage emergency gynecology calls and consults
  12. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY3 - Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Rotation (One 10-11 Week Rotation in the PGY3 Year)

  1. Learn the evaluation and management of various endocrinopathies, including thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, ovarian etc.
  2. Learn the evaluation and management of hirsutism
  3. Learn the evaluation and treatment of the infertile couple
  4. Learn the evaluation and treatment of menstrual irregularities amenorrhea, menorrhagia, etc.
  5. Obtain knowledge about the techniques of superovulation, intrauterine insemination, and IVF
  6. Obtain knowledge about the management of ovarian hyperstimulation
  7. Obtain knowledge about the evaluation and management of congenital anomalies of the pelvis
  8. Learn about the management of the perimenopause and menopause
  9. Learn techniques of operative/diagnostic laparoscopy with or without laser
  10. Learn techniques of laparatomy including cystectomy, tubal re-anastomosis
  11. Learn about treatment of endometriosis-medical and surgical
  12. Learn more about the technique of operative hysteroscopy
  13. Learn more about sexual dysfunction
  14. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY3 - Gynecology Rotation Night Float(University Hospital/Crouse Hospital) (2 Total in the PGY3 Year)

  1. Manage postoperative patients and associated complications (pulmonary embolus, hemorrhage, hypertensive crisis, etc.)
  2. Manage emergencies (gynecology) -ectopic, hemorrhage, etc.
  3. Perform operative interventions in emergency situations (laparoscopy or laparatomy, hysteroscopy)
  4. Conduct in-house consultation services
  5. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY3 - High Risk Obstetrics Rotation (2 Total in the PGY3 Year)

  1. Learn how to evaluate and manage complex obstetric patients - preterm labor, preeclampsia/eclampsia, diabetes, heart disease, etc.
  2. Admit maternal transports
  3. Learn more about antepartum and postpartum care for the high risk obstetric patient
  4. Perform cesarean sections
  5. Perform circumcisions
  6. Manage the labor of complicated patients
  7. Acquire further knowledge of operative vaginal delivery
  8. Acquire further knowledge of obstetric sonography
  9. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY3 - Outpatient Medicine Rotation (2 Total in the PGY3 Year)

  1. Learn to evaluate and manage comorbidities in the obstetric patient, i.e., hypertension, diabetes, seizure disorders, respiratory and endocrinological disease
  2. Obtain more knowledge of obstetric ultrasound
  3. Learn more about the use of medical consults (i.e. cardiology) when necessary
  4. Learn more about the management of anticoagulation
  5. Learn more about blood sugar control and management in the diabetic patient
  6. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY4 - Breast Clinic Rotation (One in the PGY4 Year)

  1. Learn the evaluation and management of benign and malignant breast masses
  2. Obtain knowledge of breast imaging studies - mammogram, sono, MRI, etc.
  3. Learn the techniques of fine needle aspiration and core biopsy
  4. Obtain knowledge of chemotherapeutic and radiation treatment
  5. Obtain knowledge of complications resulting from surgical interventions
  6. Learn about risk factors and screening protocols
  7. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY4 -Day and Night Obstetrics Rotations (4 Total in the PGY4 Year)

  1. Supervise all junior residents; management of complete medical issues and obstetric issues
  2. Perform operative vaginal delivery
  3. Perform cesarean sections (complicated)
  4. Manage laboring patients
  5. Provide obstetric analgesia
  6. Repair complicated lacerations (i.e. 4th degree)
  7. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY4 - Gynecology Rotation (2 Total in the PGY4 Year)

  1. Supervise entire gynecology service
  2. Perform complex cases, including laparoscopy and laparotomy (under supervision of surgeon)
  3. Perform vaginal surgery /reconstructive (supervised)
  4. Obtain increased knowledge of radiologic studies
  5. Involvement in operative hysteroscopic procedures
  6. Involvement in gynecology emergency cases
  7. Conduct in-house consultation services
  8. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY4 - Urogynecology Rotation (2 Total in the PGY4 Year)

  1. Learn how to evaluate pelvic floor dysfunction - prolapse, incontinence, etc.
  2. Learn the principles of conservative and operative intervention
  3. Obtain exposure to operative vaginal surgery and bladder suspension procedures
  4. Obtain knowledge of urodynamic studies
  5. Acquire knowledge of postoperative care and management of complications
  6. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly

PGY4 - Neonatal Intensive Care Rotation (One Total in the PGY4 Year)

  1. Learn about resuscitation of the newborn in the delivery room
  2. Obtain knowledge about managing prematurity - including ventilator
  3. Learn about electrolyte management of the premature infant (including TPN)
  4. Care for continuity patients, one half-day session weekly
