New York State Osteoporosis
Prevention & Education Program

The New York State Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Program (NYSOPEP) is a coalition of health-related organizations which function under the New York State Health Department. Its purpose is to promote education about the prevention of osteoporosis. This educational program is implemented by Regional Osteoporosis Resource Centers. NYSOPEP increases public awareness of osteoporosis by conducting outreach campaigns, health fairs, employee wellness programs, and professional education programs. NYSOPEP educates women, the general public, and health care professionals about measures that can be taken to enhance bone density, quality, and reduce the likelihood of fracture later in life. As one of five NYSOPEP sites, the SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse and its University Hospital, together with the Onondaga County Health Department, serve Central and Northeastern New York. The program is part of the Metabolic Bone Disease Center and is supervised by its director, Dr. Arnold Moses.
