Upstate Medical University broke ground for the $15 million Upstate Cord Blood Bank that will collect, process and store umbilical cord blood donated by families throughout central and northern New York to be used by those in need of life-saving medical treatments and for medical research. The two-story building will be located on Upstate's Community Campus and open in 2014. The building's design, construction work and equipment is made possible by a $15 million state grant obtained by Senator John DeFrancisco.

Claire Lewkowicz, left, and Kelly Cummings, both second-year medical students at Upstate Medical University, were among the 150 Upstate students who participated in the university's Day of Service Sept. 8. Lewkowicz and Cummings helped create a community garden for the Brady Faith Center in Syracuse. In total, Upstate students aided nine non-profits, including Habitat for Humanity, the Salvation Army, Southwest Community Center and the Syracuse Parks Conservancy.

Upstate will use low-dose CT scans to detect early lung cancer tumors. According to a national study, screening for lung cancer using low-dose CT scans can reduce lung cancer mortality by 20 percent.
