John McCabe, M.D., named chief executive officer of University Hospital

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — John McCabe, M.D., who has served in various key leadership positions at Upstate Medical University during his 22-year association with the university, has been named chief executive officer of University Hospital and senior vice president for hospital affairs, the university announced today. McCabe has served as interim chief executive officer since June 1.

The appointment, effective immediately, was announced by Upstate President David R. Smith, M.D.

"John has been an outstanding leader at Upstate Medical University and has brought distinction to all the areas he has guided at the university," said Smith. "The multifaceted leadership he brings to this position with his outstanding knowledge of clinical issues, academic medicine, hospital finances, our role in the SUNY system and throughout the region, will serve University Hospital and the public well as we move forward on many issues.

"John's success as a leader and his ability to articulate a vision and build successful teams to implement that vision is a chief skill of his that will benefit this institution greatly," Smith added.

McCabe takes leadership of the hospital at a time of great progress, with the recently opened East Tower with 108 private patient rooms, and next month's opening of the Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital and an upcoming groundbreaking for a cardiac care center.

In his more than two decades of service to Upstate, McCabe has been instrumental in developing key relationships here, at home, throughout the country and internationally.

McCabe assisted in the creation of a mass casualty unit and upgraded infirmary at the New York State Fairgrounds; developed an emergency medicine simulation center for the training of medical residents, and area EMS professionals; and spearheaded the university's creation of Katrina Response Unit to answer calls for medical assistance during the Hurricane Katrina disaster in 2005. He oversaw the recent expansion of University Hospital's Emergency Room and its opening in 1996, and expanded the university's hyperbaric medicine program, one of the only 24-hour hyperbaric programs in the state.

Nationally, McCabe has helped lead discussion on national health issues as president of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He also has served as a member of the executive committee of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

Internationally, McCabe has developed medical conferences at universities in China and India, and has hosted delegations of international physicians to Upstate.

McCabe's appointments at Upstate include the positions of medical staff president, medical director of University Hospital, vice president and vice dean for hospital affairs, senior associate dean for planning/resource management, and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine.

McCabe's research interests have covered numerous aspects of emergency medical care, including the treatment of hemorrhagic shock, cardiac resuscitation, and the care of patients in the prehospital (EMS) environment.

Board certified in emergency medicine and undersea and hyperbaric medicine, McCabe received his medical degree from Upstate in 1979 and completed his residency at Wright State University School of Medicine.

He is active on numerous community organizations, including the Central New York Community Foundation, where he has served as a member of the board of directors.
