SUNY Upstate celebrates Black History Month with February events

SYRACUSE, N.Y.— SUNY Upstate Medical University will celebrate Black History Month with the following free public events in February:

? Black History Month Opening Ceremony will feature a presentation by Sharon Jack-Williams, executive director of Dunbar Association Inc., entertainment by Sons of David of New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ, and a traditional dinner Feb. 1, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in in the university's Campus Activities Building, 155 Elizabeth St., Syracuse.

? Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church Puppet Ministry, with a solo by Rev. H.B. Alex of Victory Temple, will perform at a free Family Night and Puppet Show Feb. 7, at 6 p.m. at Dr. Martin L. King School, 416 E. Raynor Ave., Syracuse. Snow date is Friday, Feb. 8.

? Professors Paula C. Johnson and Janis McDonald of the Syracuse University College of Law will join law and communications students in presenting "Cold Cases: Seeking Justice for Unsolved Civil Rights Murders," Feb. 13, from noon to 1:30 p.m., in the Ninth Floor Auditorium of Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave., Syracuse.

? James E. Turner, Ph.D., of the Africana Studies and Research Center at Cornell University, will present "Remembering the Father of Black History: Carter G. Woodson," Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. at the Dunbar Center, 1453 S. State St., Syracuse. Turner will discuss Woodson's book The Mis-Education of the Negro in honor of the 75th anniversary of its publication. George Kilpatrick of WCNY-TV will facilitate a post-lecture discussion.
