University Hospital wins Consumer Choice Award as one of the most preferred hospitals

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — University Hospital of SUNY Upstate Medical University has been designated as one of the most preferred hospitals in the United States and in the Syracuse market, having received the 2007/08 Consumer Choice Award from the National Research Corporation (NRC).

"This award underscores the unyielding commitment University Hospital employees have to provide our patients—and their families—with the best medical care, the most advanced procedures and the most accommodating patient and family amenities. I think the award also demonstrates the academic difference that is inherent in the care we offer the public," said Phillip S. Schaengold, J.D., senior vice president and chief executive officer of University Hospital, noting the hospital's relationship with SUNY Upstate. "We are grateful for the public's recognition of this effort through the Consumer Choice Award."

NRC annually provides Consumer Choice awards for the most?preferred hospitals in 180 markets across the country. Winners, announced in Modern Healthcare magazine, are selected from the nation's most comprehensive, nationwide consumer healthcare profile, the NRC Healthcare Market Guide (HCMG). Data found in the HCMG represents consumer surveys from nearly 200,000 households or 400,000 consumers in the United States. Consumer Choice Awards for hospitals are based on consumer preference responses. This is the 12th year NRC has awarded hospitals whose consumers have recognized them for providing quality healthcare services.

Winners are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the company's annual NRC Healthcare Market Guide study. Of the 3,000 hospitals named by consumers in the study, the winning facilities rank highest in their Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau.
