President's Student Ambassador Program created

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - SUNY Upstate Medical University students are poised to play a key role in the university's outreach efforts through the creation of the President's Student Ambassador Program.

Under the new initiative, selected students will be called on to assist the university in its outreach efforts with alumni, donors, civic and cultural leaders and friends of the university. At the president's request, they will serve as student representatives of the university at various special campus and community events and activities, including presidential receptions and other high-profile gatherings.

"These students will serve as goodwill envoys for the university," said David R. Smith, M.D., president of SUNY Upstate Medical University. "Whether greeting dignitaries or students and families on campus or representing the university at community functions, these students will help broaden the understanding of SUNY Upstate in many ways," said David R. Smith, M.D., president of SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Smith said part of the program will help the local community learn more about the students attending SUNY Upstate. "Some of the best and brightest students in the country have chosen to study here at SUNY Upstate and reside in Central New York," he said. "This program provides a way for the community to learn more about SUNY Upstate by interacting with our students, as well as help our students to learn about our local community."

More than 1,170 students are enrolled in SUNY Upstate's colleges of Graduate Studies, Health Professions, Medicine and Nursing and at the university's campus in Binghamton.
