Lynn Cleary, M.D., named senior associate dean for education

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Lynn Cleary, M.D., professor of medicine and associate dean for curriculum has been named senior associate dean for education. The announcement was made by Steven. J. Scheinman, M.D., SUNY Upstate executive vice president and dean of the College of Medicine.

Cleary's responsibilities include creating a teaching academy, which will help develop and promote innovative and effective teaching methods; initiating strategic planning and quality improvement process for education, managing educational resources and directing the clinical skills center. She will also have oversight responsibility for curriculum, student affairs and admissions, graduate and continuing medical education.

In her new post, Cleary becomes a member of the newly formed leadership team for the College of Medicine. Other members are Laura Schweitzer, Ph.D. vice president for academic affairs and vice dean of the College of Medicine; Kenneth Barker, Ph.D., provost and vice president for research; Leonard Weiner, M.D., associate dean for clinical affairs; Mary Grace VanNortwick, senior associate dean for resource management; Phillip J. Schaengold, JD, interim executive director of University Hospital; and Steven Brady, vice president for finance and management.

Cleary, a fellow of the American College of Physicians, holds numerous leadership posts on national medical and educational panels, including the Association of American Medical Colleges and the National Board of Medical Examiners. In addition to her administrative responsibilities, Cleary maintains a clinical practice as a general internist and has been included in the list of "Best Doctors in America." In 2004 she was named SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professsor.
