Prosthesis designer wins key alumni award from SUNY Upstate Medical University

Leonard Marmor, M.D., who designed and developed the Marmor Modular Knee prosthesis, has received SUNY Upstate Medical University's Outstanding Alumnus Award.

Marmor, who is widely recognized as a pioneer in the field of joint replacements, has held faculty positions at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has been on the staff at Saint John's Hospital and Medical Center, Santa Monica, Calif., since 1969. He has authored several textbooks, published more than 2,400 papers in medical publications and has completed more than 240 lectures worldwide.

Marmor has been a steadfast supporter of medical education. The Leonard Marmor Surgical Arthritis Foundation offers two $1,000 scholarships to fourth-year students. In 1999 he added a $1,000 award for a nursing student. Marmor supports 48 different medical scholarships nationwide.

Marmor earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University in 1952. SUNY Upstate, located in Syracuse, N.Y., traces its roots to the Geneva Medical College, established in 1834. The college was relocated to Syracuse University in 1871, transferred to the State University of New York in 1950.

The Outstanding Alumnus Award is presented annually by SUNY Upstate Medical University's Medical Alumni Association.
