SUNY Upstate's Richard Cantor named outstanding educator by American College of Emergency Physicians

Richard M. Cantor, M.D., FACEP, FAAP, associate professor of emergency medicine and pediatrics and director of pediatric emergency services at SUNY Upstate Medical University, has received the 2002 Award for Outstanding Contribution in Education by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP). He received the honor Oct. 6 at ACEP's annual convention, held in Seattle. Cantor was selected from a field of more than 22,000 emergency medicine physicians.

The award recognizes a member who has made a significant contribution to the educational aspects of emergency medicine.

Cantor is a nationally recognized expert in the field of pediatric emergency medicine. He edited ACEP's "Pediatric Emergency Guide" and a section on pediatric emergencies in "Emergency Medicine: A Comprehensive Review." He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters and is a reviewer for the "Annals of Emergency Medicine" and on the editorial board of "Pediatric Emergency Care." He is currently at work on two textbooks: "Classic Teaching Cases in Pediatric Emergency Medicine" and "Evidence-Based Issues in Pediatric Emergency Medicine."

Cantor has received many honors in his career, including ACEP's Speaker of the Year Award, the SUNY Upstate President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and the SUNY Upstate Pediatric Attending of the Year Award.

Cantor is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He earned his medical degree at SUNY Upstate in 1976 and has been a member of its faculty since 1981.

He resides in Fayetteville.
