SUNY Upstate's Joslin Diabetes Center to hold 2002 Community Diabetes Forum Nov. 6

The Joslin Diabetes Center of SUNY Upstate Medical University will hold the 2002 Community Diabetes Forum Wednesday, Nov. 6 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel, 801 University Ave.

Joslin Diabetes Center speakers include Ruth Weinstock, M.D., Ph.D, the center's medical director; Gerald Saponara, M.D., podiatrist; and certified diabetes educators Jody Kearns and Suzanne Meyers.

Featured speaker will be Marlowe Smith, minister of music at The First Cathedral in Bloomfield, Conn., who will give a diabetic patient's perspective on the struggle to live with the disease. Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and weighing 400 pounds, Marlowe got his "wake up call" in 1994 when doctors diagnosed a cyst on his leg. This meant drastic medical measures unless he took action. Today, through changes in diet, discipline and exercise, Marlowe now weighs 220 pounds.

The Joslin Diabetes Center at the SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse opened in 1995 as the 11th affiliate of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, and the only one of its kind in upstate New York.

The event is free but seating is limited. Attendees must register by calling University Hospital's Health Connections at 315-464-8668.
