SUNY Upstate scientist awarded $650,000 for cancer research
David M. Gilbert, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at SUNY Upstate Medical University, has been awarded $650,000 in two separate grants, both for research into understanding the control of cellular proliferation, a central goal of cancer research.
Gilbert received a $400,000 grant from the National Science Foundation and a $250,000 grant from the American Cancer Society.
"Nothing is more basic to cancer research than the control of cellular proliferation," Gilbert said. "To understand the regulatory mechanisms that lead to uncontrolled proliferation of cancer cells, we must pinpoint when in the cell-cycle the mechanism develops that enables DNA to replicate.
"Knowledge of the critical components of the DNA replication apparatus will allow the use of novel anticancer drugs and the development of new strategies in cancer therapeutics," Gilbert continued.
Gilbert, who joined SUNY Upstate in 1994, has had his research published in numerous journals, including Nature Cell Biology, Journal of Cell Biology and Science.
Gilbert resides in Manlius.
