SUNY Upstate physician wins honor from CNY Hospice organization
Colleen O'Leary, M.D., a faculty member at SUNY Upstate Medical University and chief medical officer of the perioperative division of University Hospital, has been named the winner of the Anita Award by Hospice and Palliative Care Associates, Liverpool.
The Anita Award, presented annually, recognizes a physician for honest and sensitive communication with and support for families facing a life threatening illness. The award is named for former Hospice patient Anita Stockman.
O'Leary, past president of Onondaga County Medical Society, received her medical degree from the SUNY Upstate Medical University in 1978 and completed her residency training at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center. She joined SUNY Upstate in 1991.
This is the third consecutive year that SUNY Upstate has received the award. Last year, the Anita Award was presented to the Department of Radiation Oncology, and in 1998 Jonathan Wright, M.D., received the honor.
O'Leary and her husband, Michael O'Leary, reside in Manlius.
