Health Science Center's Gregory L. Eastwood, M.D., Elected President of the Associated Medical Schools of New York

July 16, 1999

Gregory L. Eastwood, M.D., president of the State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse (HSC), has been elected president of the Associated Medical Schools of New York (AMS). Dr. Eastwood will serve as president until June 2001. He was elected at the organization's June 17 meeting at State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Eastwood, who served as vice president of the AMS, succeeds Herb Pardes, M.D., dean of College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. Established in 1967, AMS is a consortium of the 14 medical schools, public and private in New York state. The central mission of AMS is to work toward the continual strengthening of medical education, medical care and research in New York. The deans of member institutions comprise the AMS Board of Trustees. "This is an especially critical time for medical schools," said Dr. Eastwood. "We must continue to press hard for more research dollars for medical schools in New York, for increased enrollment of students from underrepresented populations, and to strengthen the fiscal viability of academic medical centers." A gastroenterologist by training, Dr. Eastwood has held faculty appointments in medical education for more than three decades. Prior to being named president of the Health Science Center in 1993 and dean of its College of Medicine in 1995, he served as dean of the School of Medicine of the Medical College of Georgia. He also has held faculty positions at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Harvard Medical School, Jefferson Medical College, Boston University School of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
