James E. Schwob, M.D., Ph.D., Appointed Chair of Anatomy & Cell Biology at State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse

James E. Schwob, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed to the position of chair of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Syracuse. He has served as interim chair of the Department since January 1, 1998.

Dr. Schwob joined the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology as an assistant professor in 1987 and rose through the ranks to professor in 1995. An Iowa native, he received his B.S. degree with honors in Psychology from the University of Iowa in 1975. He completed the Medical Science Training Program at the Washington University School of Medicine, receiving his M.D. and Ph.D. in Neural Science degrees in 1983.

Following two years of residency in Anatomic Pathology at Barnes Hospital/Washington University Medical Center, he completed a three-year post-doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. David I. Gottlieb in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at Washington University prior to his appointment at the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse.

Dr. Schwob was an NIH Research Career Development awardee from 1992 through 1997. His research program on the development and regeneration of the peripheral olfactory system is currently supported by two major NIH R01 grants. He is the primary investigator or co-primary investigator on three projects in the Clinical Olfactory Research Center funded by NIH under the general program directorship of Dr. Maxwell M. Mozell of the Health Science Center.

Dr. Schwob is a member of the Integrative Functional and Cognitive Neuroscience-4 Study Section in the Center for Scientific Review of the NIH. He currently directs the M.D./Ph.D. program for the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse.

Dr. Schwob resides in DeWitt with his wife, Kerina Meiri, Ph.D., and their two children, Anneke and Olivia.
