Café Kubal tapped for Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital coffee concession

SYRACUSE, N.Y.— Syracuse-based coffee roaster Café Kubal will open its fifth Syracuse location in Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital this spring.

Upstate University Hospital officials announced today (March 10, 2016) that they have selected Café Kubal to take over the space that was vacated when Tim Hortons closed last November. The space is located on the 11th floor of the East Tower and the children’s hospital.

The Advocates for Upstate Medical University, which holds many contracts in the hospital, including café concessions, gift shop, etc., led the selection process for a new children’s hospital concession.

A portion of sales at the Café Kubal in the hospital will help The Advocates support direct service projects to improve and enhance patient care services, support medical education and enhance community health. (Since 2000, the Advocates, through events and arrangements with contracts, has provided more than $2 million in support of these activities.)

“We are thrilled to partner with Café Kubal, a Syracuse original, and look forward to a great relationship that will delight staff, patients, families and visitors,” said Theresa Devennie, president of The Advocates.

“Café Kubal has already exceeded our expectations with their plans for this service for our patients, their families and our staff,” said John McCabe, M.D., chief executive officer of Upstate University Hospital. “I thank The Advocates for their work on making this relationship possible.”

Tom Welch, M.D., medical director of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, expressed his delight with The Advocates’ selection of Café Kubal and Gannon’s Ice Cream. “This facility,” he said, “is very important to our staff and families. Having 24-hour-a-day access to healthy, reasonably priced food is a win for everyone. I am particularly happy that a well-respected local company will be partnering with us.”

Devennie said the selection committee was especially pleased by Café Kubal’s local roots, its successful operation and its commitment to local foods and products.

Café Kubal owner and Syracuse native Matt Godard said he couldn’t think of a better location to put the coffee roaster’s fifth storefront. “Café Kubal is excited to align with The Advocates and to be part of the hospital community and provide a place for busy families to have a coffee break.”

Godard said the hospital’s Café Kubal location will provide more than coffee, as it adds healthy food choices and a kids’ menu to its offerings. Godard said the children’s hospital location also will serve Gannon’s Ice Cream.

Before Café Kubal opens, Godard said the existing site will be renovated to incorporate some of the colors and perhaps design features of the children’s hospital, with changes in store for the nearby seating area too.

Godard said he plans to hire up to 15 employees to staff the children’s hospital location.

Hospital officials say they are aiming for a May opening for Café Kubal.
