Upstate makes list of of top cancer programs
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Upstate University Hospital is listed in the 2015 edition of “100 hospitals and health systems with great oncology programs” by Becker’s Hospital Review. The list recognizes organizations based on clinical outcomes, multidisciplinary care teams, clinical expertise, oncology research and education and prevention efforts. It also examines recognitions earned, accreditations, and memberships to cancer-oriented groups. Becker’s Hospital Review is a monthly publication that covers hospitals and health systems.
“At Upstate we are committed to the fight against cancer,” said John McCabe, MD, chief executive officer, Upstate University Hospital. “From our biomedical research and training of future health professionals, to the state of the art care offered in both the Upstate Cancer Center and our inpatient settings, we are on the front lines of that fight every day. “
Upstate offers the most advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies and has more than 90 physicians specializing in cancer care providing a comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach, with medical, radiation and surgery specialists working together to achieve the best outcomes for complex cancers. It also has pediatric inpatient and outpatient cancer services housed in Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital and Upstate Cancer Center, which celebrated its first anniversary in July.
Among the technological advances in cancer care available to patients at the Cancer Center are the high-tech intraoperative suite (which includes 3T MRI for imaging during surgery), the Vero stereotactic body radiotherapy system for treatment of lung, liver and prostate cancer, and the TrueBeam, an advanced radiotherapy option that decreases treatment time.
The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer accredits Upstate Cancer Center, and Upstate University Hospital received the program’s Outstanding Achievement Award in 2012 and 2015. Upstate Cancer Center also has accreditations from the American College of Radiology and American College of Surgeons National Accreditation Program for Breast Cancers.
