Upstate celebrates National Nurses and National Hospital weeks

In celebration of its dedicated staff, Upstate Medical University will present a fun mix of wellness and recognition activities throughout National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week in May.

“Each year we pause to reflect on the wonderful men and women who support the health of our communities through their dedication and compassionate service,” said John McCabe, M.D., chief executive officer of Upstate University Hospital. “Thank you all for your contributions and continued support.”

National Nurses Week, May 6 to 12

Throughout National Nurses Week, May 6 to 12, Upstate’s 3RPN (Recruitment, Retention, Recognition and Professional Development) committee will present a series of activities open to the Nursing Department staff. Activities include:

Nurses Day receptions, May 6, 7: Refreshments will be provided and gifts will be delivered to units on May 6 and 7. The receptions will be held at the following locations:

Downtown Campus: Wednesday, May 6. 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Room 10405 A/B, East Tower

Community Campus: Wednesday, May 6. 6 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Dining Rooms 1 and 2.

Harrison Specialty Services Center: Thursday, May 7. 8 to 10 a.m. Across from the food court in the lobby.

UHCC: Thursday, May 7. 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fifth floor conference room.

Webinar: My patient, my code, my practice: ethical decision-making & action. Thursday, May 7. Hosted by Upstate’s Organizational Training Development and the American Nurses Association. Locations:
Community Campus: 1 to 2 p.m. Classroom A&B.
Downtown Campus: 1 to 2 p.m. 11405 A/B, East Tower

Nurses Night Out at Syracuse Chiefs, May 8: Join the Syracuse Chiefs for happy hour with live music from 5 to 7 p.m. and the game at 7:05 p.m. where Upstate’s Stroke team will throw out the first pitch.

Nurses Pampering sessions: Included are 10 to 15 minute free treatment sessions of Reiki, chair massage, and reflexology. Pre-scheduling is encouraged. Contact Kim Babcock, babcockk@upstate.edu, 464-4815 to schedule a pampering session at the following locations:
Downtown Campus: Monday, May 11. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 11th floor Kinney Foundation Performance Center, Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Community Campus: Tuesday, May 12. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Community Room.

Blessing of the Hands: Upstate’s Spiritual Care is offering the blessing of the hands for all staff in the nursing department. Locations are:
Downtown Campus: Monday, May 11. 1 to 2 p.m. 11th floor Kinney Foundation Performance Center.
Community Campus: Tuesday, May 12. 9 to 10 a.m. Community Room.

Fleet Feet Sports Nurses Open House, May 6 through 12: 
Fleet Feet Sports will host a Nurses Open House, May 6 through 12, offering special one-on-one fitting for inserts and shoes at its Clay and DeWitt stores. With each purchase, nurses will be entered to win a Pampering Package.

National Hospital Week, May 10 to 16

In celebration of National Hospital Week and to recognize the dedication of its employees, Upstate University Hospital administrators will present employees with a token of their appreciation Monday, May 11, at the following times and locations:

Community Campus from 6:30 to 9 a.m. at the main entrance and Patient Testing (Diagnostic) Center entrance; 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the main entrance.

Downtown Campus from 6:30 to 9 a.m. and 2:30 to 4 p.m.; main entrance, employee entrance and second level bridge entrance.

Also, administrators will visit hospital departments and units with snacks Wednesday, May 13 at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m., and Thursday, May 14, at 4:30 a.m.

Employees at offsite locations will be recognized for their efforts with gifts and snack surprises Monday, May 11 and Wednesday, May 13.

Be on the lookout for the National Hospital Week poster, distributed to each department at all Upstate locations and also for special messages on Upstate television screens and in Upstate Announcements. A photo display will be located at various Upstate locations.
