Oswego Radiation Oncology showcases advanced cancer treatment technology

The community had a first look at the machine and a chance to talk with medical staff at an open house on March 2. The TrueBeam system fully integrates advanced imaging and treatment technology to treat cancers with speed and accuracy at any disease site in the body.

“The TrueBeam system uniquely features Gated RapidArc® radiotherapy, an advanced method for effectively treating tumors that may move during breathing,” explains Jeffrey Bogart, M.D., Department Chairman of Radiation Oncology at Upstate Medical University. “This creates a level of precision previously unavailable and may even shorten overall treatment time.” This makes the TrueBeam an excellent solution for patients with cancers amenable to treatment with radiotherapy such as prostate cancer, and also those with complex cancers in areas such as the lung, breast, abdomen, liver and other areas subject to respiratory motion during treatment.

This system gives Oswego Radiation Oncology a full arsenal of options to help each patient fight their cancer in the best possible way. In addition to the Gated RapidArc radiotherapy, the TrueBeam integrates advanced image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT) and can also deliver conformal radiotherapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) including RapidArc treatment.

Hypofractionated treatment, which means fewer sessions overall, can also be offered in many situations because increased precision allows for higher doses of radiation to be safely and effectively administered.

Oswego Radiation Oncology will host an open house on Monday, March 2 at the Seneca Hill Health Campus located at 105 County Route 45A, Oswego from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Health professionals, patients and the public are invited to visit and learn about the technology and treatments available at the center.

For more information on the open house, or to RSVP, contact Barbara Motyka at 315-207-9066. Oswego Radiation Oncology is located at 105 County Route 45A in Oswego.

The Oswego-based unit will be the second TrueBeam system in Central New York, with the first being housed at Upstate Cancer Center. The TrueBeam linear accelerator system is manufactured by Varian Medical Systems.
