College of Nursing degree programs, post-graduate certificate earn 10-year accreditation

SYRACUSE, N.Y.-- The bachelor’s and master’s degree programs at the SUNY Upstate Medical University’s College of Nursing have been reaccredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education’s (CCNE) Board of Commissioners. Also accredited is the college’s post-graduate certificate
program, which CCNE has recently begun reviewing.  The board determined that the above programs have met current accreditation standards and are accredited through 2024, which is when the next review will take place.

CCNE contributes to the improvement of the public’s health by ensuring the quality and integrity of baccalaureate, graduate and residency programs in nursing.

Joyce Griffin-Sobel, Ph.D., R.N., dean of the College of Nursing, acknowledged the CCNE’s action. “The public can rest assured they are receiving the best health care possible when their nurse is an Upstate graduate.  I am very proud to be dean at a College that met and exceeded all the requirements that CCNE has established as nationally recognized standards of excellence in nursing programs.  Our faculty are excellent and committed to the best education possible for our students.”

The College of Nursing’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program is an upper division, transfer program designed for registered nurses from associate degree and diploma programs of nursing.   The degree program offers flexibility in completing the requirements for a baccalaureate, with multiple pathways for admission.

The college’s Master of Science in Nursing Program is designed for registered nurses with bachelor’s degrees to work as nurse practitioners or clinical nurse specialists.  The program helps prepare nurses for primary care in family, family psychiatric mental health and pediatrics.  Students can also study to become clinical nurse specialists.

Also accreditation is the college’s Post-Graduate APRN Certificate program, which is designed for registered nurses with a clinical master’s degree from an accredited nursing program who seek certification as pediatric nurse practitioners, family nurse practitioners, adult-geriatric  clinical nurse specialists, nurse educator or family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner.

The accreditation process is an arduous one, examining nearly every aspect of an institution’s degree programs. Accreditation accomplishes the following purposes: to hold nursing programs accountable to their communities of interest--the nursing profession, consumers, employers, higher education, students and their families; and to evaluate the success of a nursing program in achieving its mission, goals and expected outcomes.

About 480 students are enrolled in the College of Nursing.
