SUNY Upstate physician wins recognition for her work in the area of child sexual abuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Ann Botash, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics at SUNY Upstate Medical University and director of the CARE (Child Abuse Referral and Evaluation) program at University Hospital, has been named the recipient of the 2005 Policy and Advocacy Award from the Ambulatory Pediatric Association. Botash will accept the award May 15 in Washington, D.C.

In addition to her work at SUNY Upstate, Botash serves as medical director of the McMahon/Ryan Child Advocacy Site in Syracuse and medical adviser to Vera House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence.

The award recognizes Botash's public policy and advocacy efforts at the state and regional level that have helped improve the health and well-being of infants, children and adolescents.

Botash has been a tireless advocate for children of sexual abuse and has helped train physicians across New York on issues related to the management and treatment of sexual abuse. She established a statewide child abuse medical provider network (ChAMP) to help educate primary care providers on the management and treatment of child sexual abuse, and wrote "Evaluating Child Sexual Abuse: Education Manual for Medical Professionals" (The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2000).

Botash is one of the only physicians in central New York who is currently examining cases of suspected child sexual abuse. She works together with community investigative and treatment professionals from numerous counties including Onondaga, Oswego, Madison and Cortland.
