Upstate Medical University welcomes new students

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Upstate Medical University will welcome 507 new students to campus with a full schedule of orientation activities that include white coat ceremonies, tours, informational sessions and social events. Orientation will be held Wednesday, Aug. 24, to Sunday, Aug. 28. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 29.
Upstate’s College of Medicine will welcome 195 new students; the College of Health Professions will welcome 181 new students; the College of Nursing will welcome 106 new students; and 25 new students will join the College of Graduate Studies. Including the new students, Upstate’s total student enrollment for 2011 is 1,572.
Students will be welcomed to their college in the presence of their family and friends during various White Coat ceremonies.
The College of Medicine and the Medical Alumni Foundation will present a White Coat Ceremony and Reception Aug. 24, at 3:30 p.m. in the Oncenter Ballroom, 800 S. State St., Syracuse. Each first-year medical student will receive a white coat made possible in part by a grant from the Onondaga County Medical Society to the Parents and Family Association of the Medical Alumni Foundation. The grant also supports a reception following the ceremony.
Also on Aug. 24, the Office of the President, the NursingAlumni\Association and the Student Association of the College of Nursing (SACON), with support from Key Bank will host the College of Nursing White Coat ceremony. It begins at 5 p.m. in the ninth floor auditorium in Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave., Syracuse. Each undergraduate nursing student who attends will receive a gift. Each graduate nursing student who attends will receive a white coat.
The Dean’s Office of the College of Health Professions and the College of Health Professions’ Alumni Association will present a White Coat ceremony for its students Aug. 31, at 5 p.m. in at the Goldstein Auditorium at the Schine Student Center on the Syracuse University campus. More than 150 incoming students are expected to participate.
A President’s Welcome Convocation will be held Aug. 25, at 2 p.m. and a “Meet the Deans” welcome reception will be held the same day at 4 p.m. in the ninth floor auditorium at Weiskotten Hall.
Other orientation events include a Student Services and Activities Fair with brunch, Aug. 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the C.A.B. Lobby; and the College of Medicine’s Dinner with a Doctor, to be held Aug. 28, at 4 p.m. The College of Graduate Studies’ Dinner with a Research Scientist will be at the same time. A networking dinner with faculty for students in the colleges of Health Professions and Nursing will be held Aug. 28, at 5 p.m., in the ninth floor dining room in Weiskotten Hall.
