Week-long national exhibition of cadaver dissection photos to open at SUNY Upstate Dec. 10

“Anatomy of Anatomy,” a traveling exhibition of text and photography based on the critically acclaimed book of the same name by photojournalist Meryl Levin, will be on display at SUNY Upstate Medical University from Dec. 10 through 17. The exhibition is in the Health Sciences Library in Weiskotten Hall, 766 Irving Ave. The library is open daily. For hours, call 464-4580.

The exhibition opens Monday with a panel discussion featuring Levin and faculty and students from the College of Medicine. The discussion, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. in the ninth floor auditorium of Weiskotten Hall.

The display pairs 22 photographs of medical students during their dissection of cadavers in Gross Anatomy classes, with excerpts from journals kept by eleven students during the course.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Department of Cell Biology in conjunction with the Center for Bioethics and Humanities and the Curriculum Office.

Levin’s book, “Anatomy of Anatomy” (Third Rail Press, 2000) explores the a long-standing curiosity about “the other side,” the making of a physician.

The exhibition began its national tour in January at Cornell University’s Weill Medical College in New York.
