Governor names two to Upstate Medical University Council

SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Alan G. Hertel, executive director of the United Way of Broome County, and Thomas E. Taylor, a member of Green and Seifter Attorneys in Syracuse, have been appointed to the SUNY Upstate Medical University Council by Gov. David A. Paterson.

Alan G. Hertel of Apalachin has been named a member of the Council to the State University of New York Upstate Medical University by Governor David A. Paterson.

The Upstate Council comprises 10 members who are charged to review all major plans for the effective operation of the University. The council also serves as an advisory body to Upstate Medical University President David R. Smith, M.D.

As executive director of the United Way of Broome County, Hertel is responsible for overseeing the development of a community needs assessment; running a communitywide, multi-million dollar fund raising campaign; assessment of program grant applications and their ability to meet identified needs; allocation of funds to support programs; operation of an information and referral call center; oversight of a significant trust fund.

Prior to United Way, Hertel worked at New York State Electric and Gas for more than 30 years in a variety of supervisory and managerial roles, most as regional manager for community outreach and development.

Hertel's community affiliations, include service as chair of the board for the Greater Binghamton Chamber, past president of Binghamton Rotary Club #64, member of Visions Federal Credit Union board, Spiedie Fest board member, Integrated County Planning Committee member. He was recognized by the Greater Binghamton Chamber as the Volunteer of the Year in 1999.

Hertel graduated from SUNY Binghamton and Elmira College, and is a1997 graduate of Leadership Broome. He and his wife, Dawn, have three grown daughters, Emily, Carolyn and Stephanie and a granddaughter.

Hertel resides in Apalachin.

Thomas E. Taylor is a member of the Green and Seifter Attorneys in Syracuse, where his areas of practice include real estate, banking and financial institutions, government relations, not-for-profit organizations and general business matters.

Taylor's community affiliations include service as secretary to the Rotary District's Youth Exchange Program for 30 local and 30 international students. Taylor is also a board member of the Baldwinsville Center for Arts Inc., a former board member of the Onondaga County Bar Association and past President of Legal Services of Central New York Inc.

Taylor holds a bachelor's degree from Syracuse University, a master's degree from Michigan State University and a juris doctorate from Syracuse University.

Taylor and his wife, Melinda, are the parents of two teenage sons, Derrick and Justin.

A native of Skaneateles, Taylor has lived in the Baldwinsville area for more than 20 years.
