Villarreal named cardiology chief at SUNY Upstate Medical University

Daniel Villarreal, M.D., associate professor of medicine at the University of Missouri School of Medicine and chief of the cardiology section at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Columbia, Mo., has been named professor of medicine and chief of the division of cardiology at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Villarreal joined the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1984 as an assistant professor of physiology and medicine. He has since held numerous positions there, including director of the Cardiology Fellowship Program and co-director of the division of cardiology.

In his affiliation with the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Columbia, Mo., which began in 1984, Villarreal has served as director of the coronary care unit, chief of the cardiology section and director of the cardio-renal service.

His research, which has been funded by the American Heart Association, the National Institutes of Health, the Veterans Administration Research Program and various pharmaceutical companies, has focused on the role of nueroendocrine mechanisms in the pathophysiology of heart failure and hypertension. Villarreal has published more than 140 papers and abstracts in various journals, including Circulation Research, Hypertension and the American Journal of Physiology.

Villarreal earned his doctor of medicine degree from the National University of Mexico. He completed a residency in internal medicine and a cardiology fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis.

Villarreal is a past recipient of the National Veteran’s Affairs Scissors Award (1998) and a four-time winner of the Veterans Administration Research Career Development Award. He was named the Harry S Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital Physician of the Year in 1993.

Villarreal is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a Counselor of the International Society for Heart Research. He is also a member and fellow of the American Physiological Society, the American Federation for Clinical Research and the American Society of Hypertension, among others. He served as president of the Central Society for Clinical Research in 1998.

Villarreal, a native of Mexico City, resides in Fayetteville.
