Shillitoe wins honor for his pioneering research on oral cancers
Edward Shillitoe, Ph.D., professor and chair of the department of microbiology and immunology in the College of Medicine at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University, has been honored for his pioneering research by the International and American Associations for Dental Research (IADR).
Shillitoe received the IADR’s Experimental Pathology Research Award in recognition of his “outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to the understanding of the mechanisms governing the health and disease of the oral cavity.” Shillitoe received the award at the group’s annual meeting held earlier this month in Washington, D.C.
Shillitoe has published more than 90 articles on oral soft tissue disease. Last year, Shillitoe and his research team, in the first study of its kind, discovered that the herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) destroys oral cancer tumors in mice. The discovery was published last year in Oral Oncology.
An internationally recognized scholar, Shillitoe is a member of numerous organizations and associations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
SUNY Upstate is one of 125 academic medical centers in the United States. It consists of four colleges: Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions and Graduate Studies.
The IADR, which has more than 11,000 members representing some 80 countries, seeks to advance research and knowledge of oral health worldwide.
Shillitoe resides in Manlius.
