University Hospital brings message of healthy living to the State Fair Aug. 23 to Sept. 3

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Issues ranging for childhood heath concerns to how to quit smoking and eat right will be front and center as dozens of physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals from University Hospital will be on call at the hospital’s exhibition at at the New York State Fair, which opens Aug. 23.

The University Hospital exhibition, located in the Hall of Health on the New York State Fairgrounds, will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. during the fair, which ends Sept. 3.

“University Hospital’s home at the New York State Fair provides an opportunity for people to learn more about healthy living and see some of the new treatments and services that are now available at the hospital,” said Phillip Schaengold, J.D., M.B.A., chief executive officer and University Hospital and senior vice president for hospital at SUNY Upstate Medical University.

The schedule for University Hospital exhibition is below.
? Aug. 23: Experts will be on site to talk about stroke warning signs, smoking cessation and healthcare concerns for older adults.
? Aug. 24: Concerns about tainted toys and lead poisoning? Stop by and talk with experts from the Upstate New York Poison Center. Also on hand will be geriatricians and representatives of Health Connections.
? Aug. 25 and 26: Kid’s health is the topic of the day, so University Hospital pediatricians will be on hand to answer questions and provide updates on Golisano Children’s Hospital at University Hospital project.
? Aug. 27: University Geriatricians will discuss aging issues.
? Aug. 28: Free pulmonary function tests and carbon monoxide screenings will be offered and plenty of information on how to quit smoking will be on hand as well as experts from the hospital’s smoking cessation program. Information on breast, lung and colon cancer will also be available.
? Aug. 29: The obesity issue will get the spotlight today as staff from the Bariatric Center of Excellence will be available for questions
? Aug. 30: Looking to get questions answered about physical therapy and other rehabilitation issues? Today, physical therapists and other rehab specialists will be available to answer questions.
? Aug. 31: Central New York’s only medical library, the Health Sciences Library at SUNY Upstate Medical University, will be front and center at the fair. Staff will be on hand to suggest ways the library might be able to answer your health questions.

University Hospital is a 360-bed level 1 trauma center that is part of the State University of New York and is the future home of the Golisano Children’s Hospital.
