Upstate Medical University officials, joined by organ donor and transplant recipients, urged individuals to sign up and become organ donors, by signing the state’s donor registry. The wait list for a kidney transplant in CNY now nears four years.

Organ Donor Awareness Day 2011

Poison Center sponsors Drug Take Back Day April 30
The Upstate New York Poison Center, part of Upstate Medical University, is assisting in the National Drug Take Back Day April 30. The poison center is partnering with several local Walgreens’ pharmacies where the public can safely dispose of expired or unused prescription drugs.

Mary Ann Shaw, a community leader who led the successful multi-million dollar fundraising campaign for the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, and David Botstein, Ph.D., a renowned geneticist and pioneer of the Human Genome Project, will receive honorary degrees from Upstate Medical University May 22.

Researchers highlight weight gain from psychotropic drugs
Literature review in the Journal of Obesity by Upstate research team finds that patients on psychotropic drugs gain anywhere from 4 to 37 pounds, and that unwanted weight gain can derail patients compliance with much-needed drugs.
