In My Father’s Kitchen seeks volunteers

In My Father's Kitchen, Team Upstate's Your Choice charity for 2019, is looking for volunteers to assist with its work at this Saturday's Mary Nelson Youth Day BBQ. The event begins at 11 a.m.; volunteers are needed from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. In My Father's Kitchen tent will be located at the Mary Nelson Youth Center, 2849 S. Individuals sought to represent Upstate at New York State Fair

Cellist David Ying and pianist Elinor Freer perform at Upstate Aug. 14

The Skaneateles Music Festival will celebrate their 40th  anniversary with performances by cellist and Grammy winner David Ying and pianist Elinor Freer Aug. 14 at 10:30 a.m. in the atrium of Upstate Cancer Center, and at 1 p.m. in the Performance Center at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Deadline for Emerging Leaders United applications is Aug. 19 

Upstate employees are welcome to apply for Upstate’s chapter of Emerging Leaders United, an affinity group with United Way of Central New York. Participants of the Emerging Leaders program will represent Upstate Medical University and have the opportunity to attend leadership and community education programs, volunteer events, and network with leaders from Syracuse businesses. Emerging Leaders are required to fulfill 16 hours of volunteer service from September 2019 to September 2020. WW at Work begins Aug. 27

A new WW at Work begins Aug. 27 from noon to 1 p.m. in 10405A in the East Tower at Upstate University Hospital’s Downtown Campus. To enroll, participants must be present at this meeting. Registration for the 12-week program is $132.60 and payment options are available. Those who register will receive a kitchen kit. Upstate Foundation hosts national speaker Scott Deming Sept. 10

Scott Deming—national speaker, author and trainer—will present The Magic of Process, Purpose and Leadership Tuesday, Sept. 19 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. in 4414 Academic Building. Hosted by the Upstate Foundation, all Upstate healthcare staff are welcome. Nursing and social work attendees are eligible for 1.5 CEU credit hours. Deming helps teams and individuals improve communication skills, become stronger leaders, and find lasting patient loyalty. The event is part of the Grateful Patient and Family Program and is co-hosted by the Physician Philanthropic Council and Upstate Philanthropic Council. Upstate offers education during Malnutrition Awareness Week Sept. 23 to 27

Upstate Nutritional Services and Morrison Healthcare will offer educational webinars for health professionals during Malnutrition Awareness Week Sept. 23 to 27, in room 10405A in the East Tower of Upstate’s Downtown Campus. The American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) is accredited to provide medical, pharmacy, nursing, and dietetic credits. To receive continuing education credits, participants must register online at https://www.nutritioncare.org/memberlogin.aspx.  The schedule is as follows. 

  • Sept. 23 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Malnutrition Across the Spectrum: A Case-Based Approach from the Acute to the Chronic Critically Ill Patient (1.5 CEC)
  • Sept. 24 from 4 to 5 p.m. Improving Nutrition Status in the Cancer Patient with Nutritional and Pharmacological Therapies (1 CEC)
  • Sept. 25 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Implementing Nutrition Screening: Lessons Learned in Facilitating Practice Change (1.5 CEC)
  • Sept. 25 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Pediatric Feeding Disorders: Identification and Interventions 1.5 CEC)
  • Sept. 26 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Moving Beyond the Malnutrition Diagnosis: A Multi-Disciplinary, Case-Based Approach to Implementing Nutrition Interventions (1.5 CEC)
  • Sept. 27 from noon to 1 p.m. Addressing Food Insecurity in the Malnourished Patient (1 CEC)

Time management and journaliing classes open to Upstate employees Sept. 25 and 27 

Take Back Your Day will be held Sept. 25 from 8 to 11 a.m. in the East Lounge, Campus Activities Building. Time management tips for getting organized, utilizing time more effectively and managing stress will be offered. 

The Art of Journaling will be held Sept. 27 from 8 to 11 a.m. in the Community Room, Community Campus. Journaling techniques to help you reflect, clarify and create self-awareness will be offered.

DiSC assessment and class offered by OTD

Organizational Training and Development offers open enrollment in DiSC personal profile assessment classes. Participants complete an online assessment, followed by a three-hour class where they will learn about behavioral differences, how to improve working relationships, and how to facilitate better teamwork and communication. Emotional intelligence course available to Upstate 

The TalentSmart’s Mastering Emotional Intelligence (EQ) class teaches techniques for raising self- and social-awareness skills, managing your emotions and relationships, and reviews participant EQ scores. SUNY Institute for Global Health seeks volunteers 18 years of age and older for a simple blood draw. Time for the entire visit should last approximately one hour.
