Prospective Fellows
Thank you for your interest in a Fellowship in Nephrology at SUNY Upstate in Syracuse. The fellowship includes one year of clinical experience and at least one year of research. The Nephrology program is based at the University Hospital of the SUNY Upstate Medical University. The entire Division Faculty participates in the training of all fellows. The clinical facilities include a 30 station outpatient unit for hemodialysis and CAPD/CCPD, a 5 bed unit for inpatient hemodialysis, a transplantation program (30-40/year), 5 specialty intensive care units, and complete nephropathology services. The clinical year includes training in and responsibility for acute and chronic hemodialysis, home hemodialysis and CAPD; medical aspects of transplantation and experience in acute peritoneal dialysis; Continuous Renal Replacement Therapies; and renal biopsy techniques. The clinical year schedule includes;
- five months on the Nephrology Consultation service which does over 400 new consultations per year at University Hospital and the adjacent Crouse Hospital and VA Medical Center
- five months on the Outpatient Dialysis service caring for 150 chronic dialysis patients
- the option of one moth service elective time on a related service (Transplantation, Immunology, Pediatric Nephrology, Pathology, Endocrinology, Research preparation)
- and four weeks vacation.
Call is typically every fourth weekend.
The majority of time in the second year is spent participating in a clinical research project or in a basic science lab. During both years the fellow will also attend weekly outpatient Nephrology clinics. A full schedule of conferences is maintained, including three weekly Renal conferences and a research conference every other week, as well as Grand Rounds and other Departmental conferences.
