Prospective Fellows

Thank you for your interest in our Nephrology Fellowship Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. Training is primarily orientated around clinical experience, although some research time can be structured. The entire Division Faculty participates in the training of all fellows. Clinical facilities include a 30 station outpatient unit for hemodialysis as well as CAPD/CCPD and home hemodialysis, a 5 bed unit for inpatient hemodialysis, a transplant program with about 40 transplants yearly, multiple specialty intensive care units including cardiolthoracic surgery, neurosurgery, stroke care, and a burn unit, and complete nephropathology services. Clinical training includes responsibility for acute and chronic hemodialysis, home hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, medical aspects of transplantation, continuous renal replacement therapies, renal biopsy techniques and interpretation. The first year schedule includes 8 months on the consult services, divided between two services. More than 600 consults are provided each year between University Hospital, Crouse Hospital, and the Veterans Hospital. Additional training involves two months on a clinic rotation with clinics in outpatient transplant management, peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis, stone clinic, and pediatric clinic. Two months are elective time with 4 weeks of vacation taken during elective time. Call is typically every fourth weekend. In addition to the inpatient clinical services, each fellow is assigned a continuity shift of chronic in-center hemodialysis patients for the entire two years of the fellowship. In the second year, 4 months are on consult services, 4 months are in the clinics, and 4 months are electives. All fellows have continuity clinic weekly, alternating between the Veterans Hospital and the University Health Care Clinic, and see a full spectrum of renal outpatients..

A full schedule of conferences includes three weekly renal conferences, research and journal club, physiology discussions, renal pathology conference, as well as Medicine Power Rounds and other Departmental conferences.
