The Metabolic Bone Disease Center

The Metabolic Bone Disease Center is the umbrella organization that oversees and integrates the activities of the physicians and staff at the University Hospital who are committed to caring for, learning about, and sharing their knowledge about adult patients with osteoporosis, osteomalacia, Paget's disease and other metabolic problems affecting bones. The 3 major components of the program are:

  1. To provide referral and consultative services to the patients and physicians of CNY regarding the evaluation and treatment of patients with metabolic diseases of bone. Participating clinicians include endocrinologists at the Joslin Diabetes Center and internists at 550 Harrison Street. Note that this clinical program does NOT include patients with infections or malignancies of bone, or diseases of the joints. The specialties of the consulting physicians include endocrinology, nuclear medicine, radiology, pathology and general internal medicine. With our multi-disciplinary team approach, we are able to provide patients in Central New York a uniquely comprehensive approach to the evaluation and treatment of metabolic bone diseases. The Center offers a wide array of laboratory resources for the evaluation of metabolic bone problems. These resources include the most current techniques of determining bone density, and the latest chemical markers of bone metabolism. The Center also offers ongoing management of patients in cooperation with referring physicians.

  2. Educational activities include an extensive educational program for physicians, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants, technicians, dieticians, physical therapists, and other professionals involved with diagnosing and caring for patients with osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases. The non-physician educational activities are largely conducted in conjunction with NYSOPEP.

  3. The third function of the Metabolic Bone Disease Center is to conduct research on diagnosing and treating patients with various metabolic bone problems. These studies are conducted at the Clinical Research Unit located in the Institute for Human Performance.
