Procedures for Students at Academic Risk
Students may be identified at risk for academic difficulty prior to entering
the Medicine Clerkship based on performances in previous courses. See "Early
Identification of Academic Problems" on pages 99 - 100 in Student Handbook
2005/2006.
Students may also be identified at academic risk after they have entered the Medicine Clerkship by any of their attendings, residents, elective instructors or Clerkship Directors.
Once a student is identified "at risk", a specific program will be developed for that individual to provide support and guidance in assessing and working through identified problems. This may include, but not be limited to:
- A meeting with the Clerkship Director to review specific identified risks and develop a mutual plan of action.
- Assignment of clinical sites to facilitate assessment and remediation of areas of concern. The student is also encouraged to speak with teachers directly to ensure adequate teaching time and feedback devoted to the identified problems. The Clerkship Director will not prospectively inform precepting attendings of students identified at risk before entering the clerkship. However, if, during the clerkship, a student is identified as having academic difficulty, the Clerkship Director may communicate with precepting attendings directly to insure adequate teaching time and feedback devoted to the identified problems.
- Modification of usual clerkship rotations may be considered based on specific student needs, but should not compromise the core experiences of the clerkship or modify the minimum competencies of performance level expected from each student.
- Meeting with Clerkship Director at regular intervals to track progress and give student feedback
- Referral to established support resources (e.g. study skills, counseling) may be offered as indicated.
