Joseph C. Fischer, MD,
Class of 1979, Upstate Medical University

Joseph C. Fischer, MD

The fifth of eight children, Joe Fischer loved science and the natural world. When he was 11, he saved money to take scuba lessons, bought a wet suit and tank, and was certified to dive. As a young man he built his own stone-cutter in his parents' basement and studied geology up close. Joe learned early on the value of reconstructive surgery when his childhood friend required numerous procedures after a terrible traffic accident. This early personal experience was the seed of Joe's focus on the "patient-doctor relationship" in his practice as a reconstructive plastic surgeon. As a teenager eager to serve those less fortunate, Joe volunteered his skills and energy at the Equal Opportunity Center in his hometown of Rockville Centre, NY.

After focusing his undergraduate studies on the sciences and philosophy, Joe made his way to Upstate Medical University. Upstate helped expand his keen intellect and enabled him to pursue a successful career of healing. Board certified in General, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Joe was a skilled and compassionate surgeon with a distinct ability to bond with patients, families, and colleagues. These qualities were fostered and nourished by the Upstate Alumni community and by Joe's colleagues and patients in the greater Syracuse area.

Joe was forever grateful to Upstate Medical Center, because it was there, at a mutual patient's bedside, that he met the love of his life, Kathy Flannery Fischer, MA RN. Joe and Kathy were married for nearly 20 years and raised five wonderful children. Their eldest, John P. Fischer, M.D., '09 (Upstate), is a resident in Plastic Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. John's wife, Rebecca Lawrence Fischer, M.D., '09 (Upstate), is completing her residency in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital Philadelphia.
