MD/PhD Program hosts seminar by Dr.Rick Bucala, M.D./Ph.D. from Yale University

On April 23, 2008, the MD/PhD Program invited Dr. Rick Bucala, Professor of Medicine/Rheumatology at Yale University School of Medicine to present a seminar to the Upstate Medical University community. Dr. Bucala spoke about his work with MIF [macrophage migration inhibitory factor] and the genetic basis of Macropharge Responsiveness. Folllowing his research presentaiton Dr. Bucala met with the MD/PhD students ot discus career opportunities and hear aobut his extensive experience.

The MD/PhD Program sponsors a lunchtime seminar series. This series is especially beneficial to students in their selection of research laboratories for summer rotations and doctoral research. The seminars also provide a venue for faculty members seeking to attract highly qualified students to their laboratories.

We believe that this series should showcase the talents of active research laboratories in multiple departments at UMU, and therefore adopted the policy of inviting for a seminar a minimum of 2 faculty members with active research programs from each of the five basic science departments.

Among these individuals are clinical researchers with appointments in a basic science department as well as newly hired faculty. This arrangement provides new and existing students with a broad exposure to UMU researchers and their programs.

In some sessions, students present the results of their summer research, thus strengthening their organizational skills and promoting their active participation in the series.
