MD/PhD

Students in the program receive a full tuition waiver and an annual stipend of $21,514

The MD/PhD program at SUNY Upstate Medical University is designed for college graduates who seek the medical training and advanced research skills required for careers in academic medicine and medical research. This seven-year, dual-degree program combines our medical school (College of Medicine) with our graduate school in biomedical sciences (College of Graduate Studies). The program starts with the first two years of medical school, followed by three years of doctoral-level research, and ending with the last two years of medical school. The MD/PhD program offers students a wide variety of research areas from which to choose. All members of the faculty, whether they are in a basic science or clinical department, may serve as a mentor if they are members of the Graduate Faculty Organization and are actively conducting research funded by extramural agencies.

The Goals of our Program

Upstate Medical University offers excellence in clinical training and basic biomedical research. Our MD/PhD program offers an opportunity for the trainees to develop both their clinical and scientific skills and to begin the path that will lead them most often into academic positions. Our goal is to train MD/PhD students to be able to compete in the clinical and research sectors of academia, and more importantly to have a significant impact on health related research problems.
