New Graphic Standards: File Types

Encapsulated Postscript (EPS)

The EPS format should be used for Microsoft Word, Corel Wordperfect, Photoshop, and any other application that supports the EPS format. This format can be re-sized while retaining smooth edges in the graphic.

  • You need a PostScript printer to print a page or file that contains an EPS image.
  • Corel Wordperfect will show a low resolution representation of the EPS image on your screen when inserted into a pag. However, the graphic will print out in high resolution.
  • EPS images can be resized without loosing their sharpness. ALWAYS resize proportionately.
  • PhotoShop will convert an EPS image to a bitmap. The imported images' resolution will depend on the resolution you choose when opening the file.

Graphic Interchange Format (GIF)

The GIF format should be used for Web pages, or whenever you need to print to a non-PostScript printer. Non-Postscript printers include many laser printers, most inkjet printers, and dot matrix printers.

  • These images should not be re-sized without first converting to 300 dpi, as they will become very rough-looking. Use the EPS version if possible.
