Library Announces Web of Science Trial
The Health Sciences Library invites all Upstate students, faculty and staff
to participate in our trial of the ISI database, Web of Science - the web version
of Science Citation Index (SCI).
SCI is popularly used for cited reference searching, a unique ISI feature.
Cited references - the footnotes or bibliography published with a scholarly
paper - are the links established by the authors to earlier works, i.e., links
to new or additional information by other authors or experts. SCI can also be
used for searching by keyword, author, title, etc.
Web of Science has all the functionality of SCI, but in a faster, more user-friendly
environment. In addition to Science Citation Index, Web of Science provides
access to Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation
Index. Collectively, Web of Science indexes more than 8,000 high quality, peer-reviewed
journals, providing users with complete bibliographic data, full-length author
abstracts, and cited references from the world's most influential research.
The integrated and flexible database permits multidisciplinary searching and
creates seamless desktop access. Users can quickly navigate "forward and backward"
through the literature, from complete bibliographic information to cited references,
to uncover relevant research and enhance the process of scholarly exploration.
The Health Sciences Library will conduct a trial of this comprehensive database
from February 15 through March 19. Access will be from the Library homepage
(http://www.upstate.edu/library/) by clicking on the ISI Web of Science icon.
(Off campus users must use LEAP to access.) Users will also be invited to complete
a short survey to register their opinions about the usefulness of this product.
